The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) what a delightful little dog. Happy,lively and extremely intelligent they think they are a big dog in a little body.
They have a super temperment, not showing any signs of agrressiveness always wanting lots of cuddles with the people they love.
Just because they are small doesn’t imply they are couch potatoes, they love going for long walks, playing games and even mini agility. However they do know where the comfy spot is on the sofa and will willingly lay and take all the fuss given.
Their name meaning Butterfly in French, refers to their ears they should be set high with lovely fringes forming the shape of a butterfly, there is the Phalene French for moth, these have the drop ears. One of the oldest of the toy Spaniels. The small head is slightly rounded between the ears with a well defined stop. The muzzle is somewhat short, thin tapering to the nose. The dark, medium sized, round eyes have thin black rims, often extending at the junction of the eyelids towards the ears. The large ears can either be erect or dropped with rounded tips. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The long tail is set high carried over the body, and covered with long, fine hair. The straight, long, fine, single coat has extra frill on the chest, ears, and the tail. Coat color is white with patches of any color. A mask of a color other than white covers both ears and eyes. A blaze (area of white extending down between the eyes) and noseband making the markings symmetrical is preferred over a solid-colored head, but it is not essential to the Kennel Club breed standard. Nose, eye-rims, and lips should be black.
The Papillon gets on well with other dogs and pets, as they are small and fine boned we do have to be a little careful.
Papillons with a very bouncy large breed or very boisterous young children, as you can imagine could easily have an accident. They are no push over though they certainly let the others know they are there, instigating the next game.
Their coat which should be silky, needs some attention, a brush through making sure there are no tangles in their fringes, under arms and trousers.
